Evaluation Criteria

This internship program links students with local businesses, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies. Students are offered valuable professional experience in journalism, technical writing or grant writing as appropriate with the needs of the supervising agency.

The goal of this internship is to draw together the academic and applied worlds, allowing students to gain field experience in the occupational area closest to his or her interests and professional field. For this experience to be beneficial to both the student and the sponsoring agency, students should already have strong writing skills.

Internship Requirements

∙ Students will work 100 -120 hours, ideally working at least 8 hours per week as outlined by both the student and immediate work supervisor.

∙ Students will attend conferences with the supervisor periodically. Each conference will be summarized in writing.

∙ Students will submit a contract at the beginning of the internship that is signed by the sponsoring agency..

∙ Students will prepare a resume and cover letter to formally introduce themselves to their immediate supervisor.

∙ Students will complete all assigned written projects for the sponsoring agency and keep copies for the professional portfolio.

∙ The student intern willt maintain an internship journal that records and reflects on the experience. Conference summaries are to be included in the journal.

∙ At the conclusion of the internship, the student will submit a portfolio to their faculty advisor that will include: the internship journal, copies of all completed assignments, a practicum paper and a formal evaluation from the sponsoring agency to their faculty advisor at the conclusion of the internship.

Students serve in a variety of internship roles learning the value of professional teamwork as they sharpen their skills.
